Be aware of breeders selling kittens as hearing when in fact they are deaf or hearing impaired!!
An article regarding the promotion of responsible breeding of White Norwegian Forest Cats is coming soon.
In the meantime........
If you are considering purchasing a white Norwegian Forest Cat please make certain the white parent and kittens have been
BAER ( Brain Auditory Evoked Response) tested to confirm their hearing status. Do not accept standard vet tests as they are not definitive and do not accept a kitten is fully hearing without a BAER test (unless you are specifically seeking a deaf cat)
BAER tests are not expensive approx 30 pounds per kitten/cat.
White cats can be unilaterally or bi laterally hearing or deaf and varying degrees of both - you or the breeder will not know without a full hearing test no matter what a breeder says! so please be aware.
Deaf kittens need socialising very differently to become confident kittens and adult cats. They can spook very easily and proper socialisation and handling skills are paramount from birth until they leave the breeder and sound advice on how to continue to care appropriately for the young kitten should be given to the new owners when the kitten leaves for their new homes. There is nothing worse to see or hear or watch than a deaf white baby who is scared!
If you require advice in the meantime you are more than welcome to contact us and please do so.
